Dusk - the Epilogue

After the second world war Poland became influenced by the USSR. The politics of the authorities at this time resulted in the first mass emigration of the Jewish population. All the trips were organised with a one way "travel document". All the Polish embassies abroad treated this emigration as illegal. Each emigrant lost his Polish citizenship immediately he received his "travel documents". In the period of 13th November 1949 to 31st July 1950 27,150 applications were filed. This action lasted till 31st August 1950, applications were examined and the "travel documents" issued until 31st December of that year. 5,500 children under 13 and 22,000 adults left Poland. The Jewish population in the country, decreased by almost 30,000 and in the middle of 1951 amounted to between 57,000 - 80,000 people. Due to the second emigration in 1968 and the following years, the Jewish population in Poland further decreased. The exact number of the inhabitants of Lodz with Jewish roots is unknown. It definitely does not exceed one thousand .
