Rzeszow's City Page

Rzeszow is a provincional town of 54 sq. km. nad 158500 inhabitants (52,6 % of wom are women).
The city is the seat of bishop and is famous for the Festival of Folk Groups of Polish Descendants. Rzeszow has several institution of higher education (the Technical University, the Pedagogical University, High Theological Seminary, affiliated faculties of: the Maria Curie- Sklodowska University and the cademy of Agriculture).

In recent years Rzeszow has become the economic, administrative, scientific an cultural centre of south-east Poland.
The city is 640 years old and we are indebted to King Casimir the Great for granting Rzeszowits municipal status. History gets tangled with the present here and as for the future things seem to have better prospects. Our geographical location is attractive: the Slovak and the Ukrainian borders are about 90 km away from Rzeszow. There is easy access to the airport (in Jasionka), that still needs a stimulus and enlivening. Rzeszow is located on the intersection of main roads and railroad lines in all cardinal directions. There are plans for motorway to be built nearby.

Remembering the legacy of the past we do take care of our monuments of architecture. They include the Fara Church (dating from the XIVth century, rebuilt later), the Town Hall (from the XVth century, rebuilt in the XIXth century), the castle of the Lubomirski family (from the XVIth century), the Piarist Monastery Complex (XVIIth century), Synagogues - the big one and the small one (XVIIth century), tenement- houses in the Market Square and many others.

We are also aware of the fact that within the course of the city's history Rzeszow used to be inhabited by many nations, among which the Jewish people had played a special role until World War II.
Thanks to the local handicraft traditions (including weaving, shoe- making, cloth- making, tile- making, smithing, butchering, baking or gold- smithing made famous by Wawrzyniec Kasprowicz in the XVIIth century) as well as the efforts and gains of the period between the two world wars when the creation of a province within the Central Industrial District with its centre in Rzeszcw (the H. Cegielski Works, the Polish Aircraft Works) was being considered, we come to the present position of our city. The city's economic status is based on several factories related to the following industries: electromechanical trade - "ZELMER" producing the whole range of automatic household equipment and WSK- PZL (Polish Aircraft Works) where aircraft engines are manufactured; food industry - "ALIMA- GERBER" (producer of fruit and vegetables juices and other child nutrients), the Meat Factory and the Noodles Factory; clothing trade - "CONRES" (that makes both ladies and gentlemens garments); pharmaceutical plant - "POLFA"; installation inustry - "ELEKTROMONTA1", "INSTAL", "BUDIMEX"; building, road-building industry etc. Furthermore, private companies seem to enjoy more and more success. There are international and regional exhibitions and fairs (INTERRES) held in Rzeszcw on a regular basis.

Trade is also developing well and there are many wholesale firms located in Rzeszow. In addition a lof of banks have established their branches in our city. The Trade & Industry Chamber operates in our area. There is a seat of the local Television Station as well as the Polish Broadcasting Station in Rzeszow. There are published many local newspapers.

You can experience unforgettable an thrilling moments in our Concert Hall (thanks to its outstanding acoustics), during theatre performances, exhibitions in art galeries and visits to our museums. We have some sister- cities in other countries like Bielefeld in Germany, Buffalo in the U.S.A., Klagenfurt in Austria, Koszice in Slovakia and Lvov in the Ukraina.

While staying in Rzeszow you can take the opportunity to visite some of the most spectacular places in our region like Lancut (in May you may be lucky to enjoy the atmosphere of the International Festival of Chamber Music organised by the Rzeszow Philharmonic Hall in the Palace of Lancut) and Lezajsk. Them, if time allows, our Bieszczady Mountains nearby are really worth a visit. They look fabulous all year round but you can admire the most breathtaking colors at the beginning of every autumn.

Naturally, we have our problems, too. But that is true of everywhere, isn't it? We are solving them systematically as we realise that no city was built in a day. But we do have a lot to offer in the form of estates, properties and enterprises. These are only some fields of possible cooperation and chances for doing good business. We also know what the most important resource of our city is- it is the human resource. People who keep a high profile of their city at all times, people who prefer day- to- day and humble jobs to conspicuous and showy activities, simply sincere, imaginative, hospitable and thrifty.

Rzeszow- the city of possibilities!
