Mielec lies in the centre of Europe, it the Sandomierska Lowland, in one of the most solar radiational places of Poland, on the River Wis3oka, near a huge complex of woodland.The First notes about a town Mielec come from 1470. Mielec had been developing very turbulently, it was destroyed several times, but thanks to its inhabitants' dilligence, thriftiness and ambitions was restored every time afterwards.The town has been developed since the time of building the Aircraft Factory in 1938, later renamed the factory of Transport Equipment.Today the 65-thousand strong Mielec occupy the area of more than 47 sq km. In Mielec There are 12 infant schools, 13 elementary schools,the same numbers of libraries, Churches (three of them are historical buildings of religious architecture) 6 banks, 5 hotels and 2 stadiums, a sports center with a swimming pool and tennis courts.Cultural development takes place in the buildings of the Mielec Cultural Centre which contain Cinemas, museums, gallenes. "Rzeszowiacy" Folk Music and Dance Ensamble, a brass band, clubs, circles and artists associations are assembled within the limits of the Cultural Centre.The town can also boast of three local weekly newspapers and the radio HIT-FM. However, the rapid fall of the demand for products of the Factory of Transport Equipment forced it during the bast ten years to reduce its production. This caused a significant growth of unemployment in the town and region. Actually, on the 28 thousand of professional active people come 6 thousand unemplayed. However , Mielec has got a lot of assets which advocate a continuation of the restructuring processes. Mielec is the first town in Poland to have a special Economic Zone, which was established thanks to efforts of the local authorities in 1996. Preferential economic conditions assured by the Goverment on the area of the zone attract domestic and foreing investors to do business and create new jobs for inhabitants. Hopes for radical changes in our town and of the life standard in the near future are being pinned on the establishment of the Special Economic Zone.
