Swinoujscie

City lying on the north-west side of Szczecin province on two islands called Uznam and Wolin.
It has nowadays more than 50.000 inhabitants.

History

A very old and fortified town, once an important setlement of the Slavonic population called Wolinian. For the first time mentioned by the Polish chronicle writer Gall Anonim in 1181, as the property of the Pomeranian Princes, who in times of  Mieszko I and Boleslaw III Krzywousty acknowledged the superiority of Polish rulers. There was a constant dispute over Swinoujscie, which often led to military rivalry between :  Denmark, Germany, Poland and Sweden. Particularly Danish invaded and destroyed this town, as they wanted to exercise power in the whole area around the Szczecin Bay.

As the result of the 30-year War (1618-1648) Swinoujscie together with a part of Pomerania was granted to Sweden.

From 1720 part of Prussia. In 1729 on the initiative of the merchants of Szczecin the front harbour was moderated and the whole settlemnt boomed. The town recived in 1753 the city rights. In the 18th century port of the seagoing fishery flee. In the 19th century base of  Prussian navy. Thanks to discovery of the salt spring Swinoujscie transformed into a spa. In 1890 rised in the section of town the health resort and Park Resort was opened too. Seriously destroyed during heavy fights in the   War World  II , in 1945 back in Poland.

One of the biggest fishery, trade and passenger polish harbour. Industry:shipyards (Morska Stocznia Remontowa) and  fishery.

 

Spa and health resort thanks to the mineral waters, salt springs of different kind, which are used to cure  breathing, circular system and skin ilnesses. Sanatoriums , health resort hospitals, nature clinic institutes , beach, Park Resort and lot of summer bungalows or rather Hotels.

It's situated on the border with Germany so you can easily go there and visit the West Side.

We have ferry which are going to Ystad, Malmo (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark), Travemünde (Germany), and other harbours.

The old chruch was build in 15th century and rebuilt in 17th, 19th century. The church's tower was erected in the 19th century.

The lighthouse was built in 1858. It was the biggest attraction for a long time - you could go there and admire the whole panorama of the Swinoujscie City . Few years ago, because of the problems with
