- Kętrzyn will be celebrating
in May
- When it comes to the planned celebrations of
signing a partnership agreement with Wesel in
Germany, this is how it should be described: these
celebrations sum up the work of three subsequent
office terms for the local government.
- What is so special about this partnership?
- Wesel is a 60-thousand inhabitant town in Rheinland
where many former residents of Kętrzyn live, people
who had to leave their homeland after 1945.
- The decrees of history can be cruel.
- We should add that often not everyone looks
at situations with all fairness. For many years,
we Poles have refused to understand the situation
of those thrown out of the home country. There
have also been times of talk about rapacious compatriot
organizations all waiting for the bad fate to
be brought upon the residents of former Eastern
Prussia. I would like to quote here a fragment
of "the status of Polish expatriates in Germany
signed on 5 August 1950 in Stuttgart: "We, expatriates
from our homeland forego revenge and retaliation.
This decision, in the view of the immense pain
that people suffered in the last ten years, is
on our part definitive and solemn. We will take
all efforts to support any undertaking aimed at
establishing a united Europe where nations can
live free from constraint and fear.

- It seems that Kętrzyn has very good contacts with former
residents
- I will not deny that over the last 12 years, this cooperation
has been very fruitful. With such issues, it is often the
first step, the first contact that is decisive. And thanks
to the first Mayor of Kętrzyn, Andrzej Sobczak, the Germans
remember this first step warmly. A milestone in our contacts
was the establishment of relationship between the Gymnasium
in Wesel and the Secondary School in Kętrzyn (the annual exchange
of youth taking place to the present). One person who played
a large role in this cooperation, a German and former resident
of our poviat, received the title of the Honorary Resident
of Kętrzyn in 1996. Last year, the name of one of the streets
was changed to Ludwig Dichel, for many years the director
of a hospital murdered by the Russians in 1945. This year,
the Town Council will review the motion for granting the title
of the Honorary Resident of Kętrzyn to Hubertus Hilgendorf,
President of the Former Kętrzyn Residents Association. He
is one of the reasons that cooperation between our towns has
been made official as of this year. wymiaru.

Spotkanie z burmistrzem Wesel Jornaem Schrohem w Urzędzie
Miasta w Kętrzynie - maj 2000/
Meeting with the mayor of Wesel, Jorn Schroh, in the Kętrzyn
Town Office - May 2000 |
- Please, say a few words about the celebrations
- We would like them to have a unique character. We have invited
all the people that contributed to establishing this partnership.
At the special Session of the Town Council with the participation
of aldermen from all terms of office, we will honor the aforementioned
Hubertus Hilgendorf. We also plan the organization of a Kętrzyn-Wesel
exhibition, a soccer match, youth meetings, with the participation
of guests from Zlate Hory in the Czech Republic, which is
also our twin town.
We would like to invite everyone to Kętrzyn.
