A town situated on the River Warta, its population is over 30,000. It is numbered among the oldest Lechitic settlements. It was founded on the place of a ford across the river on the old route from Silesia to Poznan and Gniezno.
|rem was granted municipal rights by Prince Przemys3aw I and Prince Boles3aw the Pious in 1253. The town was destroyed at the end of the 14th century. In 1393, King W3adys3aw Jagie33o established a customs chamber here. |rem developed fast as a royal town and from the 15th century it belonged to bigger towns in Wielkopolska. After Poland's second partition in 1793, it became the seat of a county. In the 19th century, industry developed slowly. At present, the town belongs to the fastest developing towns in the Province of Wielkopolska.

MOST INTERESTING MONUMENTS


|REM

St. Mary's Parish Church (8 Farna Street), late Gothic from the 15th century with a tall tower (62 m) and Baroque furnishing. In the side altar, a late Renaissance painting depicting St Mary's Adoration by St. Adalbert and St. Stanislaus. At the wall under the tower, the Mannerist tombstone of Jerzy J?czynski. At the church wall a shrine with a Baroque St. John Nepomucen's stone statue from 1734.

Former Franciscan monastery (11 Poznanska Street) consists of St. Mary's Birth's Church and the former Franciscan monastery. This Baroque complex originates from the 17th and 18th century. Richly ornamented Rococo stalls in the presbytery. The monastery comprises a music school and The Preventive and Youth Alternative Centre.

Market Square (20 Pa?dziernika Square) was laid out after the second foundation of the town in 1393. It is surrounded mainly by burgher houses from the late 19th century. On the north-west side the Town Hall from 1838, the seat of the Council. In front of it, there is Józef Wybicki's statue (1981), who is the author of the Polish National Anthem. In the centre, there is a plaque from 1946, which commemorates a mass execution during World War II. Near the board, a stone figure of St. Mary with the Infant Jesus from 1841.

Holy Ghost's Church (11 Card. S. Wyszynski Street). Late Gothic, from 1614, built in the place of an earlier one from the beginning of the 15th century. In 1841 it was partly rebuilt. Modern furnishing.

Former St. Clare's convent (7 Promenada Street), known as the 'little convent'. In the 13th century home to the Franciscan order, 17th-18th century St Clare's, later the Jesuits. It consists of the Baroque St Mary's Assumpted chapel and the former monastery from the 18th century. The convent is the seat of the Residential Care Institution for Women.

Water Tower (Mickiewicza Street). A tall tower (43.7 m) with Gothic features from 1907. It is a characteristic landmark in the panorama of the town.

Sanatorium (53 Mickiewicza Street). A Modernist building built in 1907. At present the Poznan Rheumatology Centre.

High School (11 Poznanska Street). A Neo-Romanesque building from 1869, at present Gen. J. Wybicki High School. At the entrance an erratic block with a plaque (1984) commemorating the Poznan Army in World War II.

Cooperative Bank (3 Rev. P. Wawrzyniak Street). A Secession house from about 1910 topped with a Baroque gable. On the outside wall there is a plaque from 1933 commemorating Rev. P. Wawrzyniak, who was the bank director for many years. At present, the building is the seat of the Cooperative Bank.

Place of an old castle known as Jewish Hills (Poznanska Street). Remains of a settlement from the 11th-12th century. It was a Jewish graveyard from the 15th century to World War II. Now, it is divided with the road Poznan-|rem. At the road, a group of boulders with a border stone from 1723 and a small parking lot.

Old Town Graveyard (Cmentarna Street), established in 1828 with many monumental tombs, also an obelisk (1897) commemorating the insurgents fallen in Ksi?? in 1848, quarters with soldiers' graves from World War I and an obelisk from stones (1926) commemorating fallen soldiers of the Wielkopolska Uprising.

B?OCISZEWO

Archangel Michael's Church - made of wood, built before 1739 in the place of an earlier one from the 15th century.

Grave Chapel of the Keszycki Family from the 2nd half of the 19th century, Classicistic, 2 epitaph plaques outside.

Keszyckis' palace from 1893. Neo-Rococo, one storey, a mansard roof with lucarnes. The elevation with rich architectural ornaments resembling Baroque and Rococo models. Around the palace, there is a landscape park from the late 18th century with old trees. The palace comprises the Rehabilitation Sanatorium of the Poznan Rheumatology Centre from |rem.

DALEWO

St. Adalbert's Church. Gothic from the early 17th century, built in the place of a former one from the 13th century, with Baroque interior decorations. Outside, a plaque from 1981 commemorating Rev. P. Wawrzyniak (1981) and three other plaques - a memorial to soldiers fallen in World Wars.

DOBCZYN

Manor house from 1815, in 1912 extended with one Neo-Romanesque wing. A few trees - monuments of nature - in the park, like a Canadian poplar with a circumference of 525 cm, linden - 380 cm, oak - 450 cm. In front of the manor at the road, a shrine with St. Mary's stone figure. from 1861.

GÓRA

Manor house from the 18th century with a high mansard roof, rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. Around the house, a landscape park from the 18th century situated on the slope towards the River Warta with monuments of nature - oak trees with circumferences of 605 and 550 cm, linden - 350 cm.
Wooden road cross from 1752 believed to be the oldest one in Wielkopolska.

KADZEWO

Palace from 1865, rebuilt in 1976, Classicistic style. In front of it, a monumental lime-tree.

KRZY?ANOWO

Palace from about 1910, Baroque-Classicistic style. A grand portal and coats of arms on the front elevation. Some monuments of nature in the well looked-after landscape park from the mid 18th century - ash-tree with a circumference of 440 cm, maple - 380 cm and oak - 350 cm. At present private property - not available for visitors.

Family Szczepkowski's manor house from 1904, eclectic, came into being through joining two older buildings. The shape of the house is made more interesting through two Romantic towers and the entrance porch supported with eight columns. A landscape park near the old arm of the River Warta with monuments of nature - oaks with circumferences of 425 and 365 cm, ash - 350 cm, elm - 307 cm and two Virginia junipers - 140 and 110 cm.

MECHLIN

Manor house from the early 19th century, later partly rebuilt, situated in an extensive landscape park from the late 18th century with many monuments of nature, like eleven oaks with circumferences of 392-280 cm, two western plane-trees - circumferences of 410 and 320 cm. Now, the manor house called 'Andrzejówka' comprises a tourism and recreation centre.

St. Mary's Assumption's Church from the first half of the 17th century with Baroque interior decorations. Brickwork belfry-gate in front of the church.

Family Kinder's palace from 1917, eclectic, now the seat of the 'Spójnia' Vegetable Cultivation and Seed Production Company.

Palace from 1867, extended in 1900, English Neo-Gothic style. On the slope towards the River Warta a landscape park from the late 18th century with old trees, like oaks (circumference of 610 and 440 cm), a yew shaped into a bower and others. The palace comprises a residential care institution for adults.

ZBRUDZEWO

Manor house from the 2nd half of the 19th century.
Shooting range from 1849, property of the |rem Shooters' Association, now modernized, next to it a monument (1966) in commemoration of a mass execution in 1939.
