King Jan III Sobieski
Bust of the King by Giacobo Monaldi, c 1783, Carrara marble, height 90cm. In the collection of the Royal Wawel Castle, Krakow.
The bust relates to baroque portraits of the king and shows him as a victorious leader antique armor, with a garland of laurel leaves and the order of the Holy Spirit. It was sculpted in an atmosphere of heightened regard for Sobieski's figure and martial achievements stimulated during the reign of Stanislaw August Poniatowski under the influence of anti-Turkish sentiments of the eighties of 18th century and the celebrations of the hundred anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Vienna.
