John Paul II

Monument on St. Joseph's Square.

The monument by Warsaw sculptor Jan Kucz stands at the location where the Pontiff said mass when he visited the city. Unveiled on May 30th 1999, it has a height of 11 feet, the bronze statue standing of a granite base. It portrays the Pope as bending towards a small girl who has cuddled up to him extending her hand towards his, though the hands do not touch. The monument is noted for the treatment of the Pontiff's vestments which appear lighter and more natural than in many other sculptures.
