Casimir Pulaski
Monument Monterey Square, Savannah, GA
The photograph is of the monument before its restoration. The damage sustained by the monument over time was so great that the statue of Lady Liberty that sits atop the monument and the ornate capital just under her feet required replacement with replicas. One of the reasons for the extent of the damage was that the sculptors had to exaggerate the leaves and scrolls of the capital in order for the work to still have an impact and be seen from the ground level.
"A superb work of art, standing 55 feet high, it is made of the purest white marble, surmounted by a statue of " Lady Liberty" with her arm raised, which is probably the inspiration for the famous Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor" (J. R. Portko).
