Mikolaj Rej / Mikołaj Rej (1505 - 1569) |
|
| The year 2005, marked the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Mikołaj Rej, a protestant intellectual and the first significant author who wrote exclusively in Polish. As such Rej is considered the Father of Polish Literature and the year 2005 was officially delearded the "Mikołaj Rej Year." The Polish Postal Service, for one, celebrated it with the issuance of a Mikołaj Rej postage stamp. Contemporary Poles associate Mikołaj Rej most of all with the two famous verses:
A niechaj narodowie wżdy postronne znają,
Iż Polacy nie gęsi, iż swój jezyk mają!
Among other nations let it always be known
That the Poles are not geese, have a tongue of their own.
