Description of the collection and publishing house, funded in 1817 by J. M. Ossolinski, who donated to nation his
valuable collections of books, manuscripts and museum pieces, and at the same time he defined the character of the
Institute's activity, which was to save the cultural heritage of the nation devoid of its statehood. In 1945, the
institute was moved from Lwow to Wroclaw, in the process losing 60% of the collection which remained behind in Lwow.
None the less, the Institute's collections f the nineteenth and twentieth century books and periodicals, old books,
manuscripts, prints, maps and numismatic objects comprise at present ca 1,500,000 items. It is a constantly growing stock. |

Located in the Lockwood Memorial Library, the collection's strengths are in literature and history, but the genealogical literature and the language sections are very strong for a collection of this size. Because of the broad scope of Polish studies, the range in Library of Congress class numbers is literally A to Z. Among the various unique materials belonging to the Polish Room are 21 letters and other manuscripts bearing the signatures of Poland's kings, from Sigmund August (1548-1572) to Stanislaus August Poniatowski (1764-1795)
