Pomorze Zachodnie (Western Pomerania)
The North - West of Poland includes the Baltic Coast and Pomeranian Lake District. The vast areas of the Wolinski National Park, Szczecin Bay, the great Lake Dabie, around which there are numerous recreational centers and other tourist attractions. Created on January 1, 1999 the province was comprised of the former voivodship of Koszalin and Szczecin and parts of the former provinces of Gorzow Wielkopolski, Pila and Slupsk. Before WW2, Western Pomerania belonged to Germany. Research in this area can be difficult since the names of towns were converted from their former German to their present Polish equivalent. The capital city of the province is Szczecin and it's also the western most city in Poland. lying on both sides of the Oder river. Together with Swinoujscie, it forms a dynamic marine port complex at the crossroads of transit routes linking Western Europe with the Baltic countries, and Scandinavia with Southern Europe.
