Although Poland did not exist as a sovereign state at the time of the outbreak of World War 1, on the Eastern Front much of war was fought on Polish lands with resultant massive destruction and loss of life among the local population, not to mention that conscription led to Poles serving in the armies of the three powers active in this theater.
