IR/SS 543 The Changing Face of Eastern Europe @
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focused primarily on the period since World War II, this course analyzes the domestic and foreign policies of East European states and the rise and fall of their communist parties. It studies their relations with the former Soviet Union, with each other, and with the West. We will pay special attention to efforts to replace the old East European politico-economic command mechanisms with legitimate, democratic, and effective administrative institutions. Emphasis is on Poland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and former Yugoslavia. The course seeks to demonstrate that there has never been one monolithic Eastern Europe. It will show that each country in the region has had its unique history as well as religious, cultural and linguistic traditions.
