Polish Studies at Northern Illinois University
The Institution
The Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a state-assisted educational and research institution, which offers programs in the variety of disciplines, and the professions through courses conducted on the campus in DeKalb and at several outreach centers throughout northern Illinois. NIU is located in DeKalb, Illinois, 65 miles west of Chicago. It offers the advantages of ease in daily living associated with a medium sized town while at the same time providing the cultural advantages of a nearby Chicago.

The main goal of this course is to introduce students to the Polish culture, and to explore the culture influence on modern life in Poland. The course material is arranged to analyze the process of cultural awareness throughout centuries based on the Polish history and literature.@

- COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to reinforce skills in the modern Polish language through the studies of film, nonfiction and selected readings from modern periodicals. It includes discussion of selected topics in the area of the latest literature, politics, economy, and current events. Emphasis is put on advancing grammar and improvement of oral and writing skills.@

- COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of the Polish language. No prior knowledge of Polish is required. We start with an introduction to pronunciation, then we introduce a foundation of grammar, and practice it with vocabulary expressions commonly used for communication purposes.@

Intermediate Polish
- COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The main focus of the course is to broaden pre-existing language skills by practicing more advanced grammar structures and communication. Emphasis is placed on enhancing competence in translation, conversation and writing. Reading is based on interesting facts from the Polish culture, and popular customs.@
