The English Department
The University
Established in 1364, the Jagiellonian University is the oldest university in Poland and the second oldest European university north of the Alps. Founded by an act of Polish King, Casimir the Great, it was refuded and modernized in 1400 thanks to a donation by Queen Hedwig and Ladislaus Jagiello - hence its present name.By the mid 15th Century, the University had become famous far beyond the borders of Poland, thanks to its achievemetns in law and propagation of new ideas in science and philosophy. Since all classes and academic discourse took place in Latin, the then common language of learning, language was not a barrier. Subsequetly it grew into Europe's leading school of astronomy, mathematics and geography. Among it most distinguished alumni were Niclaus Copernicus and Karol Wojtyla, later destined to become Pope John Paul II.
The Summer School of Polish Language and Culture
The school, which each year attracts several hundred students from all over the world, is in session during July and the first half of August. It offers Polish language instruction, both regular and intensive, at several levels, thus accommodating students of different entering proficiency. It also offers a rich array of culture and society courses and students are free to take them for credit or attend individual lectures on subjects of interest to them.Polonia Institute
The Polonia Institute offers a number of academic year programs which cater both to students who are interested in learning the Polish language, or improving their command of it, while learning about various aspect of Polish culture, history and society and for those whose primary interest is the country's culture and recent social changes.Centre for European Studies
The Center, earlier known as the School for Central and Eastern European Studies, was established in 1993. It is offering one year-long courses of study in both English and Polish, leading to M.A. degrees in Eastern and Central European Studies and a course of study leading to a M.A. in European Studies, the latter in English only.Faculty of Medicine - Medical Studies in English
The Faculty of Medicine offers a four and a six-year program of medical studies as well as a five year program in Dentistry.The four-year Medical Program
The program is designed for North American students who have completed premedical studies. is based on US standards and the first four semesters concentrate mainly of the premedical sciences. At the end of that period, students may take Part I of the National Boards as administered in the United States. The basic science and clinical curricula are identical to those found in the United States and the textbooks used are American ones. The similar organization of the curriculum makes transfers to similar schools in the United States (and vice versa) possible at the completion of any given semester. Upon graduation, students receive a medical diploma and the license to practice medicine. This enables them to take Medical Licensing Examination in the US, Canada and or other countries with similar educational requirements. Part I of USMLE can be taken at the end the second year of the program.
The six-year Medical Program
The program complies with common European criteria. The first two years is devoted to chemistry, biophysics, biology, anatomy, histology and embryology, physiology, and biochemistry. During the two years non-Polish speakers must take a course in the Polish language in order to be able to communicate with patients in the third and subsequent years.
Pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology and introduction to internal medicine and surgery are presented in the third year. Attendance is required at all lectures, seminars, rounds, etc. The whole spectrum of medical specialties is covered by the end of the six year. Student graduate with a degree of Doctor of Medicine.
International Business and Trade Summer Law Program
The six-week program is one mounted at the Jagiellonian University by the Columbus School of Law of the Catholic University of America of Washington, D.C. Both the Columbus School of Law and the Summer Law Program are fully accredited by the American Bar Association. All classes are conducted in English. The program, now in its ninth year, is characterized, however, by the participation, along with students form American and Canadian universities, of a number of English-speaking law students from Polish universities. The program is committed to maximizing the interaction and exchange between the North American and Polish students. All students and faculty will interact in the classroom and in various social and extracurricular activities.The program offers two six-week and four-three week courses, carrying, respectively, three and two semester hours each. Upon successful completion of the course work, American students will receive academic credit from the Catholic University of America. Students must enroll for a minimum of five-semester hours, but may take up to seven.
Summer Environmental Workshop of the Institute of Geography
The Institute of Geography and its Field Station at Lazy in Carpathian Foothills offer a 10-day workshop on Poland's environmental problems, particularly those of its southern region. This region, known for its natural and cultural beauty, has suffered significant environmental degradation from the intensive industrial development that has taken place there. The purpose of the workshop is to present, discuss, and evaluate the major environmental problems encountered in the region.The Field Station at Lazy will serve as the headquarters for the workshop. This will be locations at which presentations and discussion will be held These will focus on (a) the environmental, social, and economic effects of human activity in the region, (b) methods of monitoring environmental degradation, and (c) ways of improving environmental quality. Students will be given the opportunity to visit different areas of southern Poland.
The English Department
The Department offers a five-year course of study leading to Master's degree (M.A.) in English language and literature. All courses are taught in English, but the program is geared to Polish speakers, requiring, for instance, translation from English into Polish and vice versa. The requirements of the core curriculum are heavy in the first year (25 credits: based on an equivalency of one credit per 30 contact hours), diminish to 16, 20.5, 12 and 5, respectively, in the succeeding years. Of the remaining 20 credits needed, one each must be earned in (a) Shakespearean drama, (b) the British novel, (c) British and American Culture, and (d) Theoretical linguistics. To graduate, students are also required to write a dissertation.
