PolSci 325 New European Social Movements
- COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Our goal is to understand current changes in the relationship between citizen and state in their historical and political context. We analyze fascism in Germany and communism in the U.S.S.R. along with the dissident groups that arose under each system. We then examine "new social movements" that have formed since the 1960s, including the West European peace movement and Polish Solidarity. These provide a context in which to discuss the transformation of Eastern Europe and the issues that mobilized people in the 1990s, including ethno-nationalism and feminism. We end with a discussion of the possibilities for democratic politics in the new Europe.
