The Institution

Founded in 1847 as The Free Academy, and located in the Harlem section of New York, City College is the oldest of the City University of New York (CUNY) colleges. It is actually a small university, consisting of a College of Liberal Arts and Science and the largest complex of professional schools in CUNY. The institution has no student dormitories but attracts commuters from all five New York boroughs. Within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the History department is reputed to be a particularly strong one.
