Polish Studies at University of Colorado at Boulder

The Institution

Founded in 1876 in Boulder, this is the original campus of the University of Colorado. Built in the shadow of the Flatirons --the Boulder campus is often recognized as one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation. Of the over 26,000 students, four fifths are undergraduates.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Traces themes of democracy and nationalism in polish history from the "noble republic" of the early modern era, through the struggles with fascism and communism in the 20th century, to Poland's current position on the eastern edge of Western Europe

Language Instruction

Currently, no Polish language instruction is being offered at the University, though a one year Beginning Polish sequence used to be offered and remains on the books. The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures hopes to be able to revisit the matter. @

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Examines the struggle of nations of eastern Europe to assert their independence, from break-up of the imperial system at the end of World War I, through the Soviet bloc which emerged after World War II, to the establishment of democratic governments after the 1989 revolutions.
