COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is for students who are familiar with government and politics in the U.S. and who are interested in the varieties of democracy that exist in other industrialized countries. Its purpose is to compare different ways of democratically organizing governmental institutions, elections, and political party systems, and to assess the consequences of these differences for the ability of governments to cope with the typical problems of industrial societies. Three or four European or Asian systems of government are covered each semester, chosen from among the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, and similarly important political systems.
