Polish Studies at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The Institution

UNC's academic offerings span more than 100 fields, including 84 bachelor's, 165 master's and 108 doctoral degrees as well as professional degrees in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and law. In fall 2001, Carolina enrolled 25,480 students from all 100 North Carolina counties, the other 49 states and nearly 100 other countries.

Poland-related Resources

  • Polish Collection @: UNC-CH Library has a sizable collection of Polish materials of approximately 19,476 volumes. It includes major reference works, dictionaries, selective belles-letra, poetry and literary criticism. In the areas of History, Economics, and Political Science, the Library holds only major publications.

  • Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures @: It is the oldest Ph.D.-granting program in Slavic languages and literatures in the southern United States. The graduate programs proffer general professional development and specialized training in Russian, Polish, or Serbian and Croatian literatures, and in Slavic linguistics.

  • Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center @: The collaboration with Poland began with the planning and implementation of a pilot study in 1980-81. A baseline survey screened over 5,000 men and women aged 35-64 in Warsaw and Cracow in 1983-84. A second survey was done in 1987-88 with the second screen also containing a rescreen of 25 percent of the initial survey. A third survey began in 1992 and continued through 1994. Mortality follow-up and community surveillance for CVD in the populations sampled remains as an ongoing activity.
